Beylikdüzü


The word ‘Beylikduzu’ means ‘the estate of the bey’. In the Turkish language, ‘bey’ means ‘ruler’ or ‘chieftain’. This name was given to the place by Ottoman Turks who ruled this place for centuries. Another story behind this name is that some rich people from Edirne settled in this area in the 17th century and they were called beys.


History


Beylikdüzü District in Istanbul has a long and complicated history. The district rose to prominence after the 1999 İzmit earthquake, which damaged many old buildings in the city. As a result, many residents of Istanbul began moving to Beylikdüzü, which was seen as a safer and more modern district. In 2012, the Metrobus system was extended from Avcılar to Beylikdüzü, making it even easier for people to move to the area. As a result, the population of Beylikdüzü has grown rapidly in recent years, reaching a total of 3000 in the 90s. Today, the district is a thriving community with a variety of shops and businesses. Location




Beylikdüzü covers a large area of Istanbul, from Avcılar in the east to Esenyurt in the north and Buyukcekmece in the west. It also extends south to the Marmara Sea. Beylikdüzü is situated in the west of Istanbul and it is one of the administrative districts. It was established in the year 1984. 10 districts belong to Beylikduzu and these are – Esenyurt, Bahçeşehir, Mülkiye, Karaağaç, Beyazevler, Çamlıcasuyu, Beykent, Göztepe, Yenimahalle, and Akfırat. Out of these, Esenyurt has the biggest population which is 471.522 as per the records of 2019. The district has a total area of 55.6 square kilometres and its elevation from the ground level is 20 meters. The coordinates of Beylikdüzü are – 41° 0′ 0″ N, 28° 52′ 0″ E.


Climate


The climate of Beylikduzu is moderate with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in summers remains around 30 degrees Celsius while in winters it goes down to 5 degrees Celsius on average.


Transportation and Accessibility


The area is well served by public transport, with several bus routes and a metro line running through it. There are also a number of shopping centres, parks and other amenities. The area is popular with families and young professionals who are looking for a more affordable alternative to living in central Istanbul.
